Eating Vegan in Uganda and Rwanda

When we travel we always pack a lot of nuts, dried fruit, and other protein-rich snacks (like wasabi peas and sesame sticks—bless you, Trader Joe!) Fortunately, Ugandan cuisine is rich in beans, rice, and root vegetables, and there is always fresh fruit available.


Breakfast at the Mweya hostel-restaurant, Queen Liz National Park. (I’d already eaten the toast. That mango jam is DIVINE. Locally produced, too!)



Passionfruit was my compulsive snack of choice. At one point I think I ate seven or eight in one go.



All we could eat (and then some) at Ishasha, Queen Liz: cabbage, rice, beans and sweet potatoes.



A simple, hearty vegetable curry with mashed potatoes for lunch at the Nshongi camp outside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.



When we landed in Kigali (the capital of Rwanda), someone recommended this Chipotle-style Mexican joint for dinner. Good veggie burrito and really tasty fried pita chips!



Breakfast at our hostel in Kigali: good Rwandan coffee, toast and jam (not too healthy, I admit), and deluxe fruit salad. Our second morning there they had awesome homefries too.



I admit it: not everything was delicious. At our guesthouse at Lake Kivu in Rwanda, my potatoes “dusted with secret herbs” turned out to be a total bill o’ goods!



We went to an Indian restaurant in Kampala for dinner on our second-to-last night, and enjoyed fresh pineapple, passionfruit, and sugarcane juice.



My south Indian Thali meal, minus the yogurt.



…And rice sweets for dessert!



For our last couple meals, we wanted some authentic Ugandan cuisine. Colin took us to a couple of his favorite restaurants, where we feasted on ground nuts (pureed into a savory sauce), rice and potatoes, matoke (plaintain), chapatti, salsa and avocado. Washed it down with “banana juice,” which I found tasty if too sweet.



Local restaurant #2—a similar meal with the addition of steamed greens, which we really appreciated after so much starchy food.

    Thanks for this! I’m a teenage vegan who REALLY wants to travel to places like Africa, and I can show my mom that yes, I actually will be able to eat! Looks yummy, too, especially all the fruit 🙂
